Freight Rates Specialist (Shipping Industry)
Job profile
We are looking for an experienced Freight Rates Specialist/Manager with 8–10 years of expertise in the shipping and logistics industry. The role involves managing freight rate negotiations, monitoring market trends, ensuring compliance with international shipping regulations, and optimizing cost structures to support business growth. Excellent contacts and established relationships with shipping companies will be considered a strong advantage for securing competitive rates.

Key responsibilities

Freight Rate Management
Develop, analyze, and maintain freight rate structures across sea, air, and land transport.
Negotiate competitive rates with carriers, shipping lines, and freight forwarders.
Leverage industry contacts to secure favorable terms and cost savings.

Market & Cost Analysis

Conduct market research on shipping trends, trade routes, and competitor pricing.
Prepare cost-benefit analyses to support decision-making on freight contracts.
Forecast freight rate fluctuations and advise management on risk mitigation.

Contract & Vendor Management

Draft, review, and manage freight contracts with carriers and logistics partners.
Ensure compliance with international trade laws, customs regulations, and company policies.
Maintain strong relationships with shipping lines, port authorities, and third-party vendors.

Operational Coordination

Collaborate with supply chain, procurement, and operations teams to align freight strategies with business needs.
Support import/export documentation, including bills of lading, invoices, and customs clearance.
Resolve disputes related to freight charges, demurrage, or detention.

Reporting & Compliance

Prepare regular reports on freight cost performance, savings achieved, and market outlook.
Ensure adherence to safety, compliance, and sustainability standards in shipping operations.
Maintain updated knowledge of IMO (International Maritime Organization) guidelines and trade compliance requirements.

Qualifications & skills

Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, International Trade, or related field (Master’s preferred).
8–10 years of proven experience in freight rate management within the shipping/logistics industry.
Strong negotiation and analytical skills with expertise in freight indices and market dynamics.
Proficiency in ERP/logistics software and MS Excel for rate analysis.
Excellent communication skills for vendor and stakeholder management.
Knowledge of customs regulations, INCOTERMS, and international trade compliance.
Well-established network and contacts with shipping companies, enabling access to competitive rates.
